Horse-Drawn Streetcars

Going places with old-fashioned horsepower.

Forget the modern Main Street Vehicles and their belching fumes! Take your time to travel in style and climb into one of the classic horse-drawn streetcars of Main Street, shuttling between Town Square and Central Plaza via real tram tracks along the cobbled avenues.

When Main Street is full of bustle and activity, the Main Street Vehicles full to capacity and the sidewalks crowded with folks headed hurredly to their destinations, it's the turn of the classic, old-fashioned Horse-Drawn Streetcars to show their worth.

Climb aboard the ornate streetcar either at the interchange with Main Street Station on Town Square or amongst the gardens of Central Plaza. Then sit back and let the world pass you by, as your good-tempered Percheron horse pounds the cobbled streets to pull you along at relaxing, old-timer pace.

Trivia

  • A Disneyland icon and an opening day attraction on 17th July 1955 at the original Disneyland in California, the Horse-Drawn Streetcars are an important part of the movement and change that guests see occuring before their eyes in Main Street, U.S.A., as gas laterns turn to electric and this kind of old-fashioned horse power turns to gas power.
  • For their debut on opening day at Disneyland Paris, the streetcars of the Horse-Drawn Streetcars were entirely redesigned, placing guests facing inwards in a covered cabin rather than open to the elements. The streetcars are considerably more elaborate inside and out than their international cousins, their wood-panelled interiors featuring advertisements for such well-known Main Street businesses as Market House Deli, Ribbons & Bows Hat Shop, Harmony Barber Shop and the Main Street Gazette. They are numbered simply 101, 102 and 103, all featuring the wording "Main, Flower and Market Streets" along their sides, relating to the two secondary side streets at the heart of Main Street.
  • Unique to Main Street, U.S.A. in Paris is the Main Street Transportation Co. building. Situated on the East side of Town Square, this turn-of-the-century redbrick terminus houses the streetcars when not in operation. But look again at the building, from a distance — does its silhouette seem familiar? The Imagineers cleverly design it to have the same silhouette as the original Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland, California!
  • The only two magic kingdom parks not to feature this traditional attraction are Tokyo Disneyland, due to its unique indoor World Bazaar entrance street, and Hong Kong Disneyland, which was built in 2005 without tram tracks.

Tips

  • Although there are three streetcars housed at the Main Street Transportation Co. depot, it can be rare to see more than one operating at once and this attraction does sometimes remain as a high season special, with no streetcars operating at all on certain days.
  • If you've a choice, sit at the back for an unobstructed view out of the streetcar. At the front, the "drivers" will need to stand behind the horse, who can also prove a little smelly!
